ISS As I've Never Seen It Before

Radiators and Individual Modules

Radiators and Individual Modules

I got a night with a really high overhead pass, still air, and perfect focus.

The more horizontal piece is the truss, the vertical piece is the section where the astronauts live. You can see that it appears to pinch in a few spots near the top, that's actually the division between some of the modules! You can even see detail in the radiators, they look somewhat like pieces of paper that have been folded a bunch of times.

To get this I left my phone in burst mode and just took pictures across the entire pass. I didn't stop to make sure I was getting images, I wanted to get images of the whole thing. After aligning all my images in PIPP I was rewarded with a video of the pass!

The apparent rotation comes from 2 things:

  1. The perspective changes as it goes by. Think of it like watching a car go passed, first you see the front, then the side, then the back.

  2. My camera is firmly attached to the telescope, so as I tilt it up and down the camera will appear to rotate.
